Recently we described a couple of ways to clear or "clean"
the energy in one's space, using crystals and essential oils. Any method of
clearing the energy works best when the physical space is already organized so
that energy can flow easily. Once that is done you can rethink the layout from
an energetic perspective, such as feng shui.
Let's start with the basics - making SPACE. This is especially
important for key rooms - your bedroom, your office, your sacred
space.Julie Morgenstern - author of
Organizing from the
Inside Out and frequent TV guest - provides a simple
acronym to remember how to take control of any space.
Sort - Purge -
Assign - Containerize -
Equalize
Sort:
Identify what's important to you and group
similar items.
Purge:
Decide what you can live without and get rid
of it (e.g. through donations, sales, storage, trash). If in doubt, ask these
key questions:
- Do I want it?
- Do I need it?
- Do I use it?
- Do I like it?
Many people use the four box system to support the purge
process:
- Save (this belongs here; I use it all the time)
- Put Away (this belongs elsewhere; good for seasonal or infrequently used
items)
- Sell / Donate /
Recycle (someone needs this more than I
do)
- Trash (nobody needs this junk)
Assign: Decide where the
items you keep will go. Make your system logical, accessible and
safe.
Containerize: Make sure
your storage containers are sturdy, easy to handle, the right size (not too
heavy to lift or move!) and that they look good. The art of containerizing is to
do it last, not first. Make sure you label your containers so that you know
what's inside without looking. If you are a visual person, you may need to use
clear containers.
Equalize: Spend no more
than 15 minutes a day to maintain what you've done.
TIP: Your local municipal offices can provide you with information on
where and how to recycle or dispose of anything in Box 3 (sell - donate - recycle) or Box 4 (trash). This is especially important when recycling electronics or anything potentially hazardous (chemicals, prescription medicines, etc).
We're turning our trash into treasures! Mark your calendars for Saturday October 24th for the first Inner Journey Events BOOK SWAP. We'll also be collecting cash and non-perishable items for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Click here for more information.
